New Resource

I was spending some time surfing the net today after the Autism Waiver Provider Training yesterday and ran across a site that I had not seen before. After looking over the pages, it was something that I knew that I had to share with each one of you.

The webpage was for a non-profit organization located in Frederick, MD named Teach Autistic Children Today. This organization helps the community by providing grants to assist families with home and community based children. At the moment, they are only providing grants to families in Maryland. I would encourage each of my Maryland readers to check out the site. Also, if you know anyone who could be helped by this organization, please pass the information along.

To learn more about Teach Autistic Children Today, you can visit their website at www.tactmd.org.

Ear Infections

After reading several of the articles that were posted on our Pinterest page about ear infections, I thought that I should reach out to our readers about them. Especially, since I have recently gotten over a bilateral ear infection myself. If you haven’t had an ear infection (or don’t remember your last one), then count yourself blessed. I think that we can often forget how bad the pain can be until we are in the midst of it. I wouldn’t wish that pain upon my worst enemy. I had a lot of them when I was younger, but as I have gotten older and my eustachian tube has gotten a little bit longer I have them less frequently.

I wanted to encourage all of our families out there (and those of you who are not) to check out the article that we pinned to our boards located at http://www.Pinterest.com/BDSHelps. Children cannot always tell us when they are sick and it is important to recognize the signs of sickness and know when we need to contact a specialist. This is a subject that is very dear to me because I almost lost my hearing as a child. So, please take a few moments to look over these articles.

Current Research

Did you know that everyday research is being conducted about Autism? With the latest CDC report stating that 1 in 88 children are affected by Autism, I am sure that the research will continue. If you would like to know more about some of the studies that are currently being conducted, or would like to participate in some of the research, visit the Participate in Research page maintained by Autism Speaks.

Also, as we find out about studies, we post them on our Facebook and Twitter pages or list them in the BDS Journal. Make sure that you are connected to these resources to be updated immediately.

Looking for an Advocate?

I just heard about something wonderful out of Johns Hopkins University (JHU). There is a group that is training JHU undergraduates to be advocates for families whose children are receiving special education services. The advocates are available to meet with parents before and accompany them to IEP meetings. The advocates are volunteers who are currently providing services to families in North Baltimore free of charge.

For more information about this group, please email [email protected].

I Have Some Questions for You…

My clients are important to me. Each one of them is like my own child. As I sat at my desk one day working on a program for one of my children, I realized something very important… If I provide a service that my clients don’t need, then they won’t use it and if my clients need a service that I don’t provide, then they won’t call me. So, I am asking everyone that I know to complete a very short survey to help improve the services that we offer.

Thank you in advanced for your assistance,
