Ear Infections

After reading several of the articles that were posted on our Pinterest page about ear infections, I thought that I should reach out to our readers about them. Especially, since I have recently gotten over a bilateral ear infection myself. If you haven’t had an ear infection (or don’t remember your last one), then count yourself blessed. I think that we can often forget how bad the pain can be until we are in the midst of it. I wouldn’t wish that pain upon my worst enemy. I had a lot of them when I was younger, but as I have gotten older and my eustachian tube has gotten a little bit longer I have them less frequently.

I wanted to encourage all of our families out there (and those of you who are not) to check out the article that we pinned to our boards located at http://www.Pinterest.com/BDSHelps. Children cannot always tell us when they are sick and it is important to recognize the signs of sickness and know when we need to contact a specialist. This is a subject that is very dear to me because I almost lost my hearing as a child. So, please take a few moments to look over these articles.

Current Research

Did you know that everyday research is being conducted about Autism? With the latest CDC report stating that 1 in 88 children are affected by Autism, I am sure that the research will continue. If you would like to know more about some of the studies that are currently being conducted, or would like to participate in some of the research, visit the Participate in Research page maintained by Autism Speaks.

Also, as we find out about studies, we post them on our Facebook and Twitter pages or list them in the BDS Journal. Make sure that you are connected to these resources to be updated immediately.

I Have Some Questions for You…

My clients are important to me. Each one of them is like my own child. As I sat at my desk one day working on a program for one of my children, I realized something very important… If I provide a service that my clients don’t need, then they won’t use it and if my clients need a service that I don’t provide, then they won’t call me. So, I am asking everyone that I know to complete a very short survey to help improve the services that we offer.

Thank you in advanced for your assistance,

Barbara Erby

Study Searching for Participants

Hello all!

I received this email about a study that is taking place and wanted to pass the information on. Breakthrough Developmental Services, LLC has not researched this information, we are not participants in this study in any way and we are not receiving any compensation for posting this information. We simply wanted to pass along the information to anyone who may be interested.

As always, please do your own fact checking and research on the parties involved and always ask lots of questions. I am copying the note that I received below with all of the contact information.

To Primary Carers of males with Autism and an intellectual disability (defined as Low Functioning Autism or LFA),

We are pleased and excited to collaborate with the world renowned concert pianist Mr David Helfgott on an approved study that investigates the potential of Receptive Music Therapy (music listening) to reduce challenging behaviours for males with LFA!

If you are the primary carer for a male with LFA you are invited to participate in Study 1! David Helfgott has used his exceptional talents to select and provide the first 2 minutes of 6 solo piano performances for you to listen, assess then rate … requiring no more than 15 minutes of your time!

Your musical ratings (along with those from other primary carers) will be statistically analysed to identify one piece of music that will be applied in 2 further studies. As you may imagine, this research has the potential to benefit children with Autism, families, schools and therapists.

Participation is as easy as clicking the links at Steps 1,2,3:

Step 1: check that your computer is running the latest version of Adobe Flash Player! For the latest free version click the link http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

For those of you that have been following us on Facebook, you know that BDS staff members will be at Focus 2012 ~ Guideposts for Success on March 10th. Guidepost for Success will be taking place at Bel Air High School from 8:30 am – 1:00 pm. This conference focuses on teens and young adults with special needs and their families facing the challenges of transition to adulthood.  There will be vendors, agencies, organizations, and support groups that provide services to individuals with special needs.

Make sure that you stop by and say “hello” to staff members at our table in the exhibitor area. You know that I always customize our tables to fit to location. Since this one is at Bell Air High, you have to see what I have planned.

Hope to see you there!
